Couples Therapy

Romantic relationships require commitment and work. Sometimes, the people in the relationship can solve the problem themselves, sort of like doing routine maintenance on your car or home. Sometimes, however, problems accumulate and require the assistance of a professional. People come to couples therapy for all kinds of reasons, including premarital counseling, relationship issues, infidelity, mental health challenges for one (or all) member(s), issues related to sex, or issues related to external stressors.

In couples therapy, a trained clinician meets with the couple* to assist them in determining what the problem is, how they can collaborate to work on it together, and how to improve communication skills to ensure that if a similar problem occurs in the future, the couple is prepared to handle it. Research conducted by the American Association of Marriage and Family concluded that over 97% of surveyed couples got the help they needed from couples therapy. In addition, 93% of couples said therapy gave them more effective tools for dealing with conflict.
